Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982, in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Onika's parents were mixed with Indian and Afro-Trinidadian ancestry. At the age of just 5yrs old, Maraj and her parents moved to Queens Borough of New york City. Onika attended Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School, where she played the clarinet. She then moved on up, and attended LaGuardia High School. She loved to sing and act, so her knowing that LaGuardia HS specialized in music and the Visual Performing Arts, she decided to participate in the Drama Club. Onika wanted to sing for her school, but sadly, she lost her voice the day of her audition. Maraj had this weird way of expressing herself. She would come up with these alter egos, and live her life as a character to get away from all of the chaotic fighting at home. The first identity she came up with was named "
Cookie". She then went on to
Harajuku Barbie, and then
Nicki Minaj, she was her favorite. There was this one particular one that stood out from all the rest:
Roman Zolanski, was one that Onika claimed as her twin sister. Maraj said, that Roman was born inside of her out of rage, and becomes her when she gets angry. Onika was fufilled and destined to make her dreams come true. She started to live the reality, when discovered by Dewayne Micheal Carter Jr, also known as
Lil Wayne. After being discovered she then signed with Young Money Entertainment. The first album including her was released on December 21, 2009, and that was titled "
We Are Young Money". That's when Nicki Minaj was born and ready for the world.
On August 31, 2009, Minaj had been released a 360 deal with the label in which she retains and owns all of her 360 rights – including merchandising, sponsorships, endorsements, touring and publishing. On November 19, 2010, Nicki Minaj's album
