High School Uniforms: Why is it Becoming a BIG ISSUE?
I currently attend MacArthur HS, in Illinois. It was recently decided on June 14, 2011, by the school board and superintendent, Gloria Davis that MacArthur and Eisenhower HS would have to wear uniforms. The uniform consists of khaki bottoms - long pants, knee-length shorts and for girls, skorts (optional)- and polo shirts, either short- or long-sleeve. Eisenhower High School students will choose from black, white or ash gray while MacArthur High School students will wear royal blue, white or gray. There is a major problem going on right now at MacArthur with our uniforms. There are girls coming to school with khaki daisy dukes on, and shirts that are not supposed to be worn. We have students coming in the school with neck ties, wrong color belts and other items that are not supposed to be worn. Some student and teachers are starting to believe that the uniforms will soon or already have become a race issue. Why? The main people that are coming to the school with the wrong clothing on, are the white girls. We have all kind of noticed that some white girls get away with wearing what ever they want, but the black students are the ones always having to change or get sent home.It is also an issue, because the faculty members that are cracking down on the uniforms, are pulling to many students out of class for ridiculous amounts of time and still expecting us to get good grades while missing class, because of our clothes. It has gotten to the point where some angry parents are starting to get involved, because of the amount of class their child(ren) are missing. There was a poster all over, with the regulations for the uniforms on it. The poster DID NOT say anything about: jewelry, neck ties, polo or bottom brands etc. These are the main things that the students at MHS are getting in trouble for.Soon or hopefully sooner, the uniform rivalry will soon get taken care of, because if not...things will get horribly out of hand, and things may happen that we all don't hope to see. The question that WILL get answered is: Why is it that the white girls get away with wearing anything, and the black students don't?
